Virtual Design World Cup for 2017 – Student competition

VDWC 2017

In 2016, three Australian teams entered the competition and two were finalists – they were sent to Tokyo to present their projects at the Forum8 Design Festival.

This year the location for the competition is Yangon in Myanmar.

In the VDWC, teams of students compete to design an innovative model for a real urban plan and present it virtually. This may be approached from various angles – urban design, architecture, BIM, sustainability, transport planning, etc – and ideally the teams comprising 3 or more students have a mix of skills.

This year the topic for the competition is Yangon, Myanmar.

  • Forum8 provides a base 3D model and loans a range of software for the duration of the project.
  • Registration is open now until June 21.
  • Students have 5 months to complete the project – due October 4.
  • Training by webinar etc (or possibly face-to-face in Australia) is provided for each software
  • Team members of shortlisted projects are invited to Tokyo at Forum8 expense to participate in the final judging and awards presentation, which this year will be in mid November.
  • There are monetary prizes for the winning teams.

Details on the project are online now: http://vdwc.forum8.co.jp/English/

There is also a Cloud Programming World Cup (CPWC), a competition to develop a new feature/plugin for Forum8 software using the SDK.

UNSW Startup looking for (Student) Industrial designer

Bicycle Light Indicator Project
A new startup at UNSW has identified a gap in the market to create safe indicator lights for cyclists. The proposed solution will work effortlessly as it allows cyclists to state their intention of turning without even lifting their hands (https://youtu.be/iPCUdIUfVdg).

Industrial Designer

"Creativity is piercing the mundane to find the marvelous" – Bill Moyers

If you want to create marvelous things, then come join my team and be a part of something that will be used by millions of cyclists out there. The brief is simple, the design needs to be contemporary, waterproof and easy to use i.e. mounting and un-mounting should really be simple.

I already have some designs figured out and would be a great place to start.

What’s on offer
Experience and the satisfaction to call something made by you and used by millions out there. A chance to take control over your creativity and be a leader in design. Additionally, if this endeavour takes off, long term employment.

James Dyson Award international student design competition

You are encouraged to enter the James Dyson Award!

The James Dyson Award is an international student design competition. It is run by the James Dyson Foundation, a global charity, which exists to inspire the next generation of engineers and designers. This design award challenges students, and recent graduates (within four years of degree completion) of engineering, product design and industrial design related disciplines to design something that solves a problem.

The creator of the best invention internationally is awarded $49,000 in prize money, and an additional $8,000 is awarded to their university department or faculty. Last year, UNSW industrial design graduate Katherine Kawecki was the international runner-up in the competition.

More details about the competition and how to enter can be found at www.jamesdysonaward.org. The competition is open from the 30th March through to the 20th July 2017.
